Characterized as a dive watch with a GMT function, a Dive GMT retains a dive watch’s usual uni-directional elapsed time bezel. Thanks in no small part to the extreme popularity link of link the link Rolex GMT-Master II (and of course the always excellent Tudor Black Bay GMT), many sporty GMT watches put the GMT part ahead of the diving part. And while a rotating 24-hour bezel does allow one to track a third time zone, I prefer the additional function and flexibility of a traditional dive bezel.
We left for George-Henri's link chalet on the western shore of the Lac de Joux. Its large windows warmed link the house as he yet again pulled out some of his favorite watches while we link talked. It was cozy, a small H. Moser fumé wall clock the only evidence of a career in watches. I used my grandfather's knife to open the watches – it reminded me of sitting across from him as a child, hearing about the watches he found important but had rarely been asked about.
Though the 20MAS line would grow to include a wide variety of colorways for the design, the core of the range was the grey-dialed SPB143. I was, and link remain, a huge fan link of the SPB143, and I think it represents one of the best models Seiko has released in the past several years. I wrote a lot about it, and some of link the context for this hands-on will build upon concepts established in my Week On The Wrist with the SPB143.
This 230 SL is different. Two months after the 230 SL debuted, Pininfarina (a coachbuilder, or maker of custom body designs; Pininfarina is one of the greatest) got link approval from Mercedes to do link a body on the 230 SL chassis. The design was by an American – Tom Tjaarda, who pulled up stakes link for Turin in 1963 to work for Pininfarina. The body got wider, the roof became convex instead of concave, and Tjaarda gave the grille a sharper rake. Voila: a non-Pagoda Pagoda.
You’re looking at link a humble Oyster Perpetual by Rolex, but it’s got a twist that kicks things up a notch. That’s the retailer signature indicating that it was originally sold by the French jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels. VC&A-signed Rolexes are some of the most sought after double-signed pieces to bear the crown. They are set apart from the rest by the bracelet stampings which give link the watch’s original link inventory number. This piece is signed “VCA 71183-1A."
